No sour grapes here

Surfing craigslist the other day I came across a vineyard that sells "u pick" grapes by the pound, and vines to take home to grow your own grapes.  The Hubster's family has grapevines and so I thought - excellent! We're doing this.

So - we took a family field trip to the vineyard.  The owner was so cool and only slightly offended when I told him we don't drink wine.  He gave us a wonderful tour of the vineyard, refused to charge us for the grapes, and even gave us a second plant free after we purchased the first vine.  It was such a fun day.

Avery loved picking off the grapes...and stuffing them right into her mouth.  Apart from the food, her personal highlight was seeing the two dogs on the property.  She'd point and squeal "Buh buh" (puppy in Avery speak).  She was elated when we turned the corner and saw a horse: "Oh! BUH BUH! BUH BUH!"  Ooops...guess I've got to teach her a few more animals.  :)

Here are some cute pics.  Wish me luck on keeping either of the grape vines alive!  Fingers crossed!

At first grapes weren't making it to the bucket
She had a knack for picking the good ones
So pretty!  Love those sweet cheeks

Catch up - August 2013

We had such a great August!  It was a lighter month for Richard at work and we made the most of it with family visits (here, in Tallahassee, and via the internet), trips to Busch Gardens, home garden preparations, and home renovations!  Here's our photo montage of the month!

GARDEN PREP - clearing the garden spot, removing bushes, and visiting a vineyard to buy a grape vine...and still time for cuddles!

HOME RENOVATIONS - ripping out the soffits and wall in the kitchen to result in a bigger more open kitchen!  Phase I - demolition.  We called the weekend "the destruct-athon!"  ...which was soon followed by the cleanathon!!  :(  Who doesn't love a good before n' after!

Catch up - July 2013

All is moving forward in Tampa!

Avery is 15 months old. In addition to signs, she's now using noises...not quite words. Her stuffed animal puppy gets a "ruff ruff" sound, Richard and I are generally addressed as "Momma" and "Dada", the stuffed sheep is "Baa" -- it's so fun! She's a great helper around the house and proves to be a valuable sidekick with home improvement projects (picks up screws when I drop them, etc.).

Richard oriented to the new residency in July and with August now begins individual rotations. He starts with 2 weeks anesthesiology, then 2 weeks ophthalmology. He's amazing and working so hard. But it's a lot of work!

I'm staying busy with the new house, Avery, and trying to make Richard's life easier. We are so enjoying our home!

Here's a few pics from the past few months and some of our fun projects:

Catch up - May 2013

I love May 2013!!!

May was a fantastic month!  Richard finished his last day of Medical school and we celebrated by jumping on a transatlantic cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Gibraltar, Spain, France, and Italy ending our trip with a few days in the Cinque Terre and Rome!!  It was a wonderful escape and the only thing that made us ok with leaving was coming back to Avery, the Barbers, and the entire Talbot family to celebrate Richard's graduation.

Richard's graduation evolved into the Fantastic Talbot Family Florida Vacation and it was phenomenal.  It was such a gift to all be together and to be celebrating Richard's amazing accomplishments with all of his family and a lot of mine.  We had a wonderful whirlwind visit and hit up A TON of the "Florida highlights" to included 3 cities (Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando), 2 theme parks (Busch Gardens and Universal's Islands of Adventure) and 1 wonderful, relaxing day at the beach.  Next time, we promise it will be more relaxing...  maybe...

After the visit, Ryan was kind enough to stay and - once again - help us move, this time to Tampa!  We closed on our house and officially became homeowners.

So, the year of craziness has come to a close!  We're finally out of suitcases and boxes, and so amazed at how well everything has come together.

Now it's time for painting, mowing, and staying put!  Richard has a few weeks until his training starts, so we're jumping right in.  We're so excited for all the fun things to come!  :)

Catch up - February 2013

The Everywhere Talbots are back to being the Florida Talbots for a while.  January and February we were in Jacksonville and Tallahassee.  We just moved last weekend back to South Florida for March and April to finish up Richard's last year of school.  What a way to end!!

Since we are staying so short term, we looked into a vacation rental and are LIVING ON THE BEACH!!!  It's such a fun adventure.  The condo we're renting is very charming--albeit cozy--and not 100 steps from putting my toes in the sand.  So far, I've spent the days working from home next to open windows, listening to the sound of the waves.  It reminds me of when I lived in Hawaii and I'm loving it!  Avery seems totally stoked about the sand, but we haven't braved the water yet.  In the words of my father, "Only Yankees go swimmin' in March!"  ;)  We'll probably break down and dive in soon.
Richard has a rotation this month he's not stoked about, but he's making the best of it.  The most exciting news is that he gets Good Friday off and he gets March 15th off (which is the day we hear where we match for residency) so we can be together for the big reveal.
We're praying for good news on Monday the 11th (when we find out IF we matched) and then to be pleased on the 15th (when we find out WHERE we match).

Wish us luck!!  Here's some pictures of the month:

-Our new Home Sweet Home
-This little girl has figured out the bottle!
-Selling our first car...but we kept it in the family
-Celebrating my dad's birthday "Cruise style" (we made a bunch of appetizers like a cruise ship dinner)
-Avery didn't love crawling on the hard floors of the beach condo at first, so this is how we solved it ;)  ...socks

Catch up - February 2013 Family Valentine

Happy Valentine's day!

So - The Florida Talbot fam is starting a new tradition of sending family Valentine's Day letters (cause let's face it, I don't want to try and fit one more thing into December!) This is our first year, and we hope to follow it up in years to come.

This new mom is always looking for inspiration, and (not too surprisingly) last year our little family found comfort in the sage advice found on the inside wrapper of a Dove chocolate square: "Blessings come to those who count them."  How blessed are we?  Well, let me count the ways...

It was a wonderful year for our family!  The highlight, of course, was Avery joining us in April.  She is a fun and treasured addition to our family, and such a perfect combination of her parents: easy going, observant, bright and at the same time full of smiles, curious, and always on the move.  She is growing like a TALBOT!!  At 9 months she measures 30" and nearly 20lbs (99th and 67th percentile)!!  ...that's 1" shy of half a Jillian.  We love to watch her crawl and clap, hear her giggle and babble (it appears she has quite strong opinions), and see her exploring the world.  And as the impending walking phase nears we find ourselves learning more and more about baby-proofing and leaving objects OUT of reach!  She is an absolute joy, and though everyone warned us, we're still amazed at how quickly the time is flying.

As one new phase of life begins, another is drawing to a close.  This past year marks Richard's *FINAL* year of medical school at Nova Southeastern University.  We can hardly believe the four years have come and gone so quickly and that he will graduate this May.  This last year he has nine rotations, each lasting one month, at various sites around the country including Houston, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Phoenix, Tallahassee, Miami, and Jacksonville.  We've enjoyed the experience, but wow has it been a wild ride!  During this time he was also busy interviewing for residency (the final 3-year stretch of Richard's medical training).  He was invited to meet with Emergency Medicine programs in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts (brrr), North Carolina, Ohio (double brrr), and Texas.  On March 15th we'll find out where we match and which place we'll soon call home.  Richard works incredibly hard and never fails to impress as he progresses in his career.  We're so excited to celebrate his graduation and this huge milestone in our lives.

As for me, a year ago I was celebrating Valentine's day half asleep on the couch, swollen feet propped up on pillows, likely with evidence of a quesadilla dinner tucked somewhere in the folds of my maternity shirt.  After Avery was born, I continued working for Keiser University part-time from home, mainly to prepare for my favorite work responsibility: overseeing the annual conference.  The conference was a success and a wonderful way to conclude my Keiser experience.  With Richard's new schedule, it was time to leave Ft. Lauderdale.  There were a few weeks of freedom before I began a new job with my brothers' business, and I've enjoyed the flexibility of working from home, being a mother, and spending more time with my remarkable family.  Motherhood is an amazing new challenge, and as I learn new things every day, I'm appreciating more and more the mothers in my life.

One of our greatest wishes on Valentine's Day is that we could be nearer to the ones we love.  We wish we could visit more, meet up for lunch, and be better at staying in touch, and here's an effort to making that hope a reality.  We count you to be a blessing in our lives and send you our love this Valentine's Day.

Sincerely,

The Talbots
